Head of State faces Questions!

The “Head of State” for the States of the Union faced some tricky questioning from the New York Times yesterday. What is most fascinating is how Trump’s assertion of “absolute power” over some branches of government have got pundits questioning how a country which is supposed to be a beacon of democracy ended up with what amounts to an autocratic supreme leader. One commentator on CNN waded in with a reference to the idea of marrying the powers of a king with a prime minister may not be advantageous¬† if the president (king) is not quite “up-to-snuff”. (I must qualify that this last line is NOT word-for-word). But I am wondering if – now that U.S. citizens are watching “The Crown” on Netflix – folks are asking: why do we have a “head of state” with powers equivalent to a king, when most modern democracies have made that role only ceremonial / symbolic or eliminated it completely?
